The Second World War and the Japanese Occupation of Hong Kong (for three years and eight months) are very important turning points in Hong Kong history. Hong Kong, after the war, has undergone drastic changes in the society, economy, people’s livelihood, and so forth. Interestingly, this period was also the time when photographic images of Hong Kong scenery entered the stage of direct colour. Such directly coloured views of Hong Kong in the early postwar period really give the viewers an impression of vigor and novelty.
Lumenvisum will present those images originally shot in colour slides during late 1940s, which would bring you to the old haunt here and there around Hong Kong. Curator Edwin K. Lai hope that public would have a deeper understanding of old Hong Kong and pay more attention to the historical development of Hong Kong’s distinctive images.
About the Curator
Edwin K. Lai is Senior Lecturer and Subject Coordinator of Photography at the Hong Kong Art School. He obtains his M.Phil. and Ph.D. at the Department of Fine Arts, the University of Hong Kong, and his publications include Visual Colours: Essays on the History of Hong Kong Visual Culture(2002), First Photographs of Hong Kong (2010), etc.
